SCOPE - Global Injury and Violence Prevention Summer School, Romania

About the program

The Global Injury and Violence Prevention Summer School will take place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania between May 13 and 19, 2018 having as main target group graduate students (MA, MPH and PhD) and young professionals interested in the Injury and Violence Prevention and/or global public health domains. The course is organized by the Department of Public Health, Babes-Bolyai University, Romania in cooperation with The University of Iowa, USA.

This one week-long summer school offers a professional introduction and training in injury and violence prevention methodology and practical application from a global perspective. Participants will be involved in panels, presentations, workshops and visits to local agencies for a global, hands-on experience.

Workshops during the training course will be taught by a number of Injury and Violence Prevention experts from Romania and the U.S., lead by Diana Dulf, PhD, Corinne Peek-Asa, MPH, PhD and Răzvan Cherecheș, MD, PhD.

Funding

This course is being conducted as part of the iCREATE: Increasing Capacity in Research in Eastern Europe project. This NIH-funded project offers public health research training to LMIC partners in Eastern Europe. If accepted to the program, you will be joined in class by public health and medical graduate students and clinicians from Moldova, Armenia and Georgia.

Aims

The Global Injury and Violence Prevention Summer School aims to equip participants with the following competencies:

Understand the basic theory and approaches to injury and violence prevention (Haddon matrix, socioecological model, etc.)
Describe the burden of injury and violence globally
Understand and estimate basic injury epidemiology measures
Understand how to measure injuries and collect data
Identify the leading causes of injury and their populations at risk
Identify and prioritize different approaches to the prevention of injuries (with an emphasis on policy)
Understand the importance of human rights, social welfare and advocacy in the violence and injury prevention decision-making process

All participants will receive a certificate of completion of the course from Babes-Bolyai University and from Injury Prevention Research Center, University of Iowa.

Costs of the program

This course will be offered at a conference site near downtown Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Participants will have easy access to the conference site, UBB facilities, and the downtown area. The cost of the program is 265 euros for EU participants and 530 euros for non-EU participants. The costs cover: accommodation in student dorms (double occupancy per room), meals (breakfast and lunch), field trips, and materials used during the summer school. The costs related to transport to and from Cluj-Napoca, visa (if applicable), and health insurance, need to be covered by the participants.

Application Process

Applications shall include a CV, a letter of recommendation from a supervisor, and a letter which describes a rationale and justification for the application (maximum 2 single spaced pages). Applications must be sent to madalina.coman@publichealth.ro by January 15, 2018. The selected candidates will be notified by February 1, 2018. If selected, candidates will be required to pay the tuition fee by March 1, 2018 in order to be accepted into the program.
