Year I

Course description: This course examines the major domains of the public health especially familiarizing students with “what is public health?” and “how to potentially apply public health in dealing with health issues within the community” by using a problem-based learning approach. The course content will cover the basic definition of public health, analytical methods used in public health, genetic, socio-economical and behavioral factors related to health interactions and environmental as well as occupational health issues. Some introductory classes will include ecological models used in public health, the role of health ethics especially in research and the composition of the health systems.

Evaluation method: Evaluation is based on quizzes, intermediate project presentations and a final project presentation.

Course description: This course aims to teach the fundamentals of effective scientific writing. The course will focus on two parts: Part (1) teaches students how to write effectively, concisely, and clearly based on critical thinking and part (2) takes them through the revision of a scientific manuscript. Main categories of activities include actual individual writing tasks, as well as undertaking review on documents. Furthermore, seminars are developed in order to actively engage students in the educational process by including scientific writing exercises.

Evaluation method: Evaluation is based on specific writing assignments, pop-quizzes, review of a scientific manuscript, and class attendance.

Course description: This course provides an introduction to research methods and designs relevant to public health specialists. The course will focus on an introduction to various research designs including experimental and non-experimental, as well as quantitative and qualitative research methods. In addition, the course will focus on providing a practical understanding of several statistical tools used in health research. The emphasis will be on knowing when to use the various tests, what they measure, and how to interpret results.

Evaluation method: Evaluation is based on an individual written exam and a group project.

Course description: This course aims to provide students an overview of the institutions, actors, and structures of healthcare systems, in general, and the Romanian health care system, in particular. The major topics to be covered include health care institutions, health care providers, health insurance models, public health programs and changes in the healthcare system.

The general objective of this course is understanding the concept of prevention in the field of communicable and non-communicable diseases. The course will focus on two parts: Part (1) definition, epidemiology, physiopathology, diagnostic and treatment of most prevalent communicable and non-communicable diseases and (2) strategies of prevention for communicable and non-communicable diseases. Seminars are developed in order to actively engage students in the educational process by including work in teams to develop interventional studies for prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
 
Objectives of teaching this subject are to:
  • introduce students to the wellness concept, which builds the foundation for health literacy and an appreciation for life-long health and physical fitness
  • understand the contemporary concept of health care;
  • understand the idea of health intervention and the levels of prevention in terms of natural history of disease;
  • locate the position of prevention in the system of health care;
  • understand and adopt the definitions of terms: health promotion, health maintenance, disease prevention, early treatment, rehabilitation value the specific (particular) measures for health promotion and disease prevention in terms of their acceptability, effectiveness and efficiency;
  • estimate the possibility of the implementation of particular measures on individual level, the level of community as well as the society as a whole.

Course description: The course aims to introduce the 1st year students to the Public Health specialized academic English, as well to improve their general English language skills. The use of English as a language of instruction, also to be employed in class debates and for evaluation, together with a corpus of materials to read and discuss in English will offer the students the opportunity to develop the knowledge of specialized English as well as enable them to access recent materials on their area of expertise. The students will be provided with a specialized terminology and enabled to use this in interactive class applications. The students will thus become familiarized – in a progressive manner, with the specific Public Health academic terminology, concepts and topics.

Course description: The general purpose of the course is to prepare the students to be able to apply statistical methods and procedures to public health and social sciences, within both the academic world and the non-academic institutions and organizations. In public health or in social sciences in general, there are required minimal skills to present and describe the most important characteristics of some (specific) data. In this context, statistics is the first course which provides the students the tools to describe a population with respect to certain characteristics, and to make inferences from samples to population. Therefore, it is a course of vital importance for the professional development of any undergraduate student in public health.

Course description: This course on qualitative research methods will be taught interactively and will involve learning about a range of research methods and implementing them through planning and carrying out a research project in small groups. This will involve both reading, planning and learning by doing. The teaching methods will include lectures, seminars, self-study, and report writing.

Course description: The module aims to offer students a good understanding of the principles and concepts of social marketing and health promotion, used in developing and implementing health campaigns. Social marketing uses commercial marketing techniques to influence individuals’ behavior, with the ultimate purpose of generating positive social change. The module covers basic social marketing principles, embedded in the broader health promotion paradigm.

Evaluation method: Evaluation is based on quizzes, one case-study presentation, and the implementation of an online campaign.

Course description: The purpose of this course is to produce graduates who understand information technology and advanced telecommunications technology by raising awareness of the increasing role and potential of information technology and advanced telecommunications technology for effective and efficient health services. This course will foster awareness of the social, ethical and legal issues associated with the introduction and use of information technology and communications technology. Also, it will provide health professionals and others with the theoretical and practical knowledge, this will enable them to take leading roles within the emerging field of Health Informatics.

Year II

Course description: This course on program design, implementation and evaluation will be taught interactively and will involve learning about key concepts and tools and implementing them through group exercises. During one full semester students will have the opportunity to work with evaluation related data, conduct formative evaluation, including stakeholders’ analysis and develop an implementation and evaluation plan based on the evidence provided and analyzed during class. The work will mostly involve a combination of reading, small group discussions and applying knowledge gained through group planning exercises. The teaching methods will include lectures, seminars, self-study, report writing and critical analysis.

Evaluation method: Evaluation is based on a group pre-post evaluation report, a formative evaluation report including stakeholders’ analysis and field work, and an evaluation plan.

Course description: The general purpose of the course is to prepare the students to apply the instruments of economics/public economics to public health and social sciences, within both the academic world and the non-academic institutions and organizations. In the public health or social sciences, it is required a minimal understanding of the role and the ways authority/government can intervene, there are required skills to analyze situations in terms of efficiency of the outcomes, equity, efficiency-equity tradeoff, etc. It is a course of vital importance for the professional development of any undergraduate student in public health.

Course description: This class introduces students to the basic ideas and theories of public administration. Whether we need government or not, what is bureaucracy and whether it is a bad thing, how can we reform the public sector, what tools does the government use in order to reach its goals and how does the decision-making process takes in the public sector are among the primary questions the course addresses. The course will cover basic concepts like public vs. private organizations, central and local Romanian public administration (organization and functioning), governmental reform, and public policy. Last but not least, the course approaches the problem of public sector ethics, corruption, its causes and consequences and the most common alternatives for fighting against it. A special attention will be granted to sunshine measures and whistleblowing, as tools for fighting corrupt behavior.

Course description: The general objective of this course is to provide the student with an overview of the health policy definition and process, the actors involved in the process and their influences as well as tools for doing policy analysis and advocating for change or improvement. The course is designed to enhance several competencies and after the completion of this course.

This course aims to guide students to analyze strategies based on real Romania`s drug management issues including regulations, manufacture, procurement, distribution, safety, policy, financing and the unique aspects of pharmaceutical trade, government, non-governmental organizations and individuals/programs in the selection and use of pharmaceutical products.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Develop an operational understanding of pharmaceutical management in Romania;
  • Discuss factors, policies and regulations influencing drug availability and access, procurement, utilization, distribution, rational use, budgeting, inventory and financing;
  • Describe the role of government, non-governmental organizations and individual/program pharmaceutical management;
  • Identify the different types of health commodities and their regulation;
  • Understand key factors in the drug management cycle;
  • Identify potential obstacles to and problems of access, as well as define creative solutions to these problems;
  • Understand the various factors influencing drug selection and the rational use of pharmaceuticals

Course description: This course provides an introduction to the principles of epidemiology. The course will focus on basic concepts and vocabulary, highlighting the dynamics of human disease, measurement of morbidity and mortality, epidemiologic design methods, causality, validity of testing, outbreak investigations, and understanding risk.

Course description: This course examines the major domains of the violence and injury prevention field. The course content will cover key concepts and tool which students will implement through group exercises that involve designing a Haddon matrix, create a data dictionary and a database on the topic of violence and injury prevention, and developing an advocacy letter. Students will learn about the distribution of injuries by age, the risk factors and types of injuries sustained by different causes of injury, and will learn how prevention efforts have reduced injuries from many causes. New risk factors for injuries, as well as new efforts in injury control, will be discussed. This will involve a combination of reading, small group discussions and applying knowledge gained through group planning exercises.

Course description: This class aims to familiarize students with the main concepts of maternal and child health, and equip them with skills to explain the mechanisms through which maternal and child health and illness are co-determined by biological, psychological, social and behavioral factors. The class covers current health problems affecting women and children health in developed and developing countries, highlighting the common health problems at different stages of the life cycle. Health disparities in maternal and child health and the health of children with special needs are also discussed. Finally, the role of different national and international organizations and the impact of policy in program planning, monitoring and assessment are explored.

Course description: This course aims to offer students a hands-on approach on how to write grant proposals by teaching them what should they consider when writing a grant. The students will learn how to search for funding, how to develop a rationale, how to develop SMART objectives, how to develop a budget, and how to structure their grant. By taking this class, students will acquire the necessary skills for getting funded by government agencies and private foundations.

Evaluation method: Evaluation is based on several individual written assignments and developing a complete grant proposal to an agency of their choice.

Course description: This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to and overview of the key areas of environmental health. The course will look at the sustainability of water, soil, food, waste, and atmosphere/energy and how these relate to public health. Through this course, students will acquire basic knowledge, attitudes and skills that are essential for environmental health policy practice.

Course description: The purpose of this course is to offer an understanding of the complex body of knowledge related to the right to health, law and ethics, drawing on recent research, and of the context, structures and agency linking health and human rights. Students will have the opportunity to develop critical and analytical thinking in the area of human rights and also to develop skills in communication and team work as well as individual reflection.

Course description: The Public Management course addresses some central issues related to the management of public sector organizations, ranging from organizational, small scale issues, like organizational culture, trust or capacity, to broader concepts like strategic management, public marketing, post new public management trends and so forth. The class aims not only to provide some basic knowledge about how public sector organizations work and are managed, but also to raise questions about the overall elements interacting with the way public organizations operate. Is there any difference between public and private organizations? How are public organizations kept accountable? What is the product public organizations “sell”? are some of the questions for which the class will strive to provide answers. Last but not least, the class brings into discussion some recent developments in the field of public administration, like privatization and public entrepreneurship and innovation. These are important concepts because students need not only to have a broad understanding of public sector management, but to be capable of decoding the present day discourse promoted by politicians and bureaucrats; to discriminate between the seen and the unseen.
